Hurricane River Campground Lake Superior

Hurricane River Campground, Pictured Rock National Seashore

Hurricane River Campground is on the Michigan Upper Peninsula, on Lake Superior, 12 miles west of the little town of Grand Marais. The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through the park. This very cool trail is 4,200 miles long and travels through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Close to the campground, along the trail is the Au Sable Light Station and a shipwreck right on at the shore.

No reservations are required. This campground has no running water but Lake Superior is very refreshing. When we were there in late August they were having unusually warm weather that meant very big, nasty biting black flies. We had to wear long sleeves most of the time.

Platte River Campground Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore is in the north eastern corner of the lower portion of Michigan, (lower peninsula) on Lake Michigan. It has three campgrounds areas, the Platte River Campground and two group campgrounds. We stayed in a group site at Platte River. We were not only far from the other campsites, we could not see them through the trees. Obviously, it was quite. We had a great time exploring the sand dunes and swimming by day and hanging around the campfire at night.

Make your camping reservations using Reserve America. If you tried to make reservations in mid-June, you would not be able to get a Friday or Saturday night until the second week of September. September is a very nice time of year to visit, by the way. It can be very humid during the summer.
